Did you ever wonder what makes someone decide to start their own company? What would make someone decide to take the plunge from employee to employer?
There are a lot of people who think that being your own boss sounds like fun! Work from home… No set schedule… No one to answer to…
Sure! All those things sound amazing! But let’s take a look at what those things may entail…
Work from home
Jammies & slippers for the WIN!! Okay, yes! This sounds amazing! No one will see me if I stay in my yoga pants all day… don’t feel like doing my hair or make up… shower? Nah… I think that can wait until tomorrow… sniff, sniff… uhhhh… second thought… 😂
Yes, it is completely true that if you work from home you have some MAJOR luxuries! No need to hurry up and get dressed for the day. Have that extra cup of coffee on the couch if you like. And NEVER AGAIN have to complain about traffic or a terrible commute. Unless, of course, you’re being a wise-ass to your friends and family! 😜
Joining the world of owning an online business can sound amazing and as long as you’re willing to put in the necessary work and dedication, absolutely can be! However, keep in mind that you still need to SHOW UP! You still need to put in TONS of hours and it’s going to be A LOT of work! No one becomes an overnight success, no matter what you’ve heard. Absolutely everyone has to start at the bottom and work their way up. 6-7 figure success stories don’t just happen when you hit “PUBLISH” on your new site. It takes time, dedication, effort & commitment. It takes showing up consistently and being transparent and true to your audience and most importantly to YOURSELF.
No set schedule
Sounds amazing right? Start your day when you want… end your day when you want. Don’t feel like working… take a day off! Okay, great! So what happens when your customers need to contact you to place an order or ask a question about one, but you don’t have a set start & stop time for each day or you just haven’t shown up to work because… hey, you’re the boss, right?
Setting regular business hours let’s your customers know you’re there for them when they need you. It helps to build trust with them and establishes you as a reputable company. Having set business hours and actually showing up for them enforces that you are reliable and a solid company for them to do business with again and again.
Granted, it might put a bit of a kink in your dream of “no set schedule” but depending on the type of business you want to build, you may need to set that schedule up regardless. You can, of course, make the schedule whatever you want it to be, but make it clear what your office hours are so that your clients can reach you when they need to or make some type of “contact customer service” option available at all times. A chat feature on your website where clients can submit messages while you’re away is helpful or you can have a customer service email where you can respond from where ever you are, whenever you have the opportunity to check into your email service, which makes running your business on-the-go a great option.
No one to answer to
Ahhhh… the dream!! No boss hanging over your head. No one to bark orders at you. No one to get after you if you come in late or make a mistake on an order. Also, no one to sign your paycheck at the end of the week. No one to hold you accountable. And no one pays your vacation, sick time or supplement your insurance costs.
Owning your own business means YOU are the responsible party. YOU are in charge of making money, so if you don’t show up… you don’t get paid. If you make a mistake… you pay the price for that error. YOU pay your own insurance costs too… fully. And if you’re sick or want time off… you may not be making money while you do that. This all depends, of course, on the type of business you want to build. But if you have a brick and mortar store front or a business that completely relies on you being present and working to make money, you will be the one fronting all the costs, even when you’re not there to run the business.
Setting yourself up with a business that can sustain itself even while you’re not present is a good way to avoid having to be “on-duty” at all times and will allow you to take time off as needed or wanted. None of this will happen over night, but building an online business where your website does the selling for you, you can continue to make money even when you’re not “at work”. Adding affiliate links to your website & blog are great ways to make money without constantly putting huge amounts of time & effort into your business. Posting videos on social media with affiliate links or links to your website or blog are also great ways to make additional income as well as drive traffic to your site!
Creating an online storefront provides you with a way to sell your products to the masses from anywhere you are, and gives you the best of both worlds! Own your own business and run it from literally anywhere… including the beach! (Assuming the internet connection reaches that far! 😉)
Now what? Have you weighed all the pros and cons and you still think you want to ditch the day job and become your own boss? If not, that’s okay! That’s why I laid this all out for you! There’s a ton to consider and owning a business isn’t for everyone.
BUT… if you read all this and you’re STILL IN… GREAT!
