As a little kid I was always goofing around with lots of different little "businesses". I had my toy cash register, my Snoopy Snow Cone Machine, my chalk board and desk that I would be the "teacher" to my poor younger cousin, who had little, to no say in the game of choice… And at every garage sale my parent's held, I was making up batches of brownies, cupcakes or cookies, that I could sell too on my own little table.
I was always trying out new ways to do something unique to make money on the side and to have something that no one else had going on. Now that I think about it, I guess those were my first ventures into entrepreneurialism.
I ended up having several different types of jobs over the years. In high school, I had seen how much money my orthodontist was raking in with each visit and thought that seemed like a really cool path to take. I got good grades and worked hard, but life happened and I never quite made it to dental school. I did end up becoming a certified dental assistant and spent a few months working for an orthodontist as his assistant, but never really found a true love for the trade and certainly wasn't raking in those big checks I had seen handed over month after month, when I went for my adjustments to my braces.
So I moved on from there to go back to the field that I was basically raised in… printing. Both my parents worked at a local print shop and from the time I was born, I heard talk of how things were done and I think I was almost destined to get into the field at some point. I started out in the bindery and eventually worked my way up to graphic designer/prepress. I did love it, but I was always thinking about other things I could try that could just be MINE.
I tried different network marketing companies and never really fell in love with the products for any of them, nor did I like the business structure of a network marketing company. Nothing against them, it just wasn't for me.
I eventually went to work for a company that was completely online and the owner worked in a small office with just a couple of people to assist her. As I learned more about how the company was run, I feel madly in love with the concept! How wonderful it was! To set up your products for sale on the internet and have people calling to place orders or ordering right online! Cha-Ching! A new sale! Cha-Ching! Hey! There's another one! It was busy and fun and EASY!! She had built her business from nothing and was making good money at it too! She was her own boss and she was happy!
I knew THIS was the answer! THIS is what I wanted to create! So I bought myself a domain name and got to work! It's a good thing I did too, because no sooner did I purchase that domain name then did she announce she was selling her company and retiring!!
I'll admit that it was a struggle to start and this is why… She was supposed to be my mentor and she was GONE… I didn't have the guidance that was promised and I had little to no idea where to turn to find out the steps I needed to take to get my business functioning like hers.
So how did it turn out, you ask? Well, 6 years later I have a wonderful business that is successful and making money. I work from my own home office. I set my own hours. I can even work in my PJ's if I want! But I'll tell ya… I wish I'd had that playbook!
So I decided now that my business is working… now that I worked through all the kinks, road blocks, pitfalls and catastrophes… that I wanted to be the help for other people that I didn't get, nor could I find. I want to help new entrepreneurs get there business started and have a place to turn to learn the things that I had to learn on my own.
